“After I posted the tax-related numbers a few days ago, I realized that I’d forgotten to include my website costs, so I’ve gone back and added that in. My website hosting is through a company called Laughing Squid, out of San Francisco. I’ve hosted Wonderella’s websites and my associated email addresses with Laughing Squid for almost 12 years, I believe, after I met the owner Scott Beale through mutual friends involved in the Bay Area art scene. The company’s always given me very reliable service and fast and friendly support whenever I’ve had a question.
“As I’m on auto-pay through a credit card with Laughing Squid, I don’t tend to look at the monthly bill. What I noticed when I sorted through my 2008 statements from them is that my monthly rate actually decreased twice during the year, beginning at $18/month for hosting the wonderella.org site and forwarding traffic from the wonderella.com site, and ending at $14/month.
“How a tiny company like Laughing Squid is able to do this without so much as a general email to at least toot their horn about it is beyond me. Contrast this with my interaction last week with my health insurance company, Anthem/Tonik/Blue Cross/ShiteCo. I was on hold for an hour and forty minutes waiting to ask why my monthly rate had essentially doubled over the past two years, and to explain that I couldn’t afford the additional hundreds of dollars they wanted me to pay every month for what amounts to an annual physical exam, two dental visits, and an eye checkup (and I pay quite a bit out of pocket for all of those once I’m there, too). The miserable fellow who finally picked up the phone had the gall to try to justify the higher premiums on the national deficit, telling me times are tough for everyone. I have no idea the connection he was trying to make between this and the fact that my rate doubled. Eventually I signed on for a plan with a lower rate and an astronomical deductible, but I’m in the market for humane health insurance for working class artists. The decision-makers for these vampiric companies are first against the wall. No cigarette.

I found the Squid, www.LaughingSquid.net while browsing on WordPress.org. It was a time of need. A need for a NEW, responsive hosting service that didn’t bog down as if they were delivering content over dial-up. I contacted some of the Squid’s customers and received some very favorable replies. Some web’masters’ stated that they have been with the Squid for 10 years. Now, that is loyalty to a hosting service doing ‘something’ right. Lucky me to come across Laughing Squid. I was looking for a host that I would feel comfortable with that would also feel comfortable with me…someone totally new to making a site.
I own an educational nfp and had no bucks to have someone make my site. So, I had to make my own…and like all first time webmasters I’ve made a few loopy mistakes.
